Please try to ignore my perceived impoliteness, as I will try to do the same Just to keep things updated, after working with MS support for quite a while, I was able to get past this point. It seems that this is an unusual problem where the system state will not restore correctly. By using specific methods I saved the basic registry hives "pre-restore", run the full restore, then recover all but the "software" hive from the original copies, and the server can be booted into DSRM.
Now the AD won't allow a normal login After cleaning up the database, doing a "losey" repair, I finally have a clean AD database, just to find out that there is a network password required for directory services to start. Seeing that this error occurs before the login screen, a normal boot is still impossible. I am still in contact with MS support, and we are still working the problem, but I am unsure of any recovery at this time. Very soon, it will be re-create the entire network, all users, groups, shares, permissions, etc.
Long process, but at least it can be done. Of course, having been down for 9 days, with no rational explaination, doesn't make me feel any better but I have talked to quite a few people and no-one seems to have seen this type of thing before. Wouldn't you know that I would hit the 1 exception right at the wrong time.
