I am amazed at the beautiful note-taking systems teachers have created, but those systems have never been right for me. I like to keep things simple and organized without having to do much work, and that includes copying papers and filing them over and over again. Before I get into my system, I want to share with you what Writers Workshop time looks like and what my students and I are doing. In Room 1B20, we write three to four times a week.

After lunch, we come in and calm our bodies down with a chapter book read aloud. With our minds and bodies refocused on classroom work, I present a Writers Workshop mini-lesson, which is followed by 30 to 40 minutes of writing time.

The writing time varies based on the mini-lesson, what day of the week it is, and how well the students are writing. I am often astonished at how long first graders can write when given opportunities like Writers Workshop.

When the students start writing, I spend two to three minutes walking around the room making sure everyone is settled before picking up my stool and clipboard. Internet Activities e. Boom Cards.
