Learning Outcomes By the end of their program, students will have demonstrated the ability to: Follow current health and safety practices in the studio and when handling materials and equipment.

Further develop the technical and conceptual skills acquired in previous years. Use specific tools, technology, techniques and media to achieve personal artistic or creative goals. Articulate a critical awareness of the values associated with their choice of imagery, formal elements or methods of construction.

Apply research in the development of a resolved artwork applicable to professional-level studio practice. Use a critical vocabulary in one-on-one exchange with the professor and in critiques that reflects on the discipline as well as on broader interdisciplinary and cultural contexts. Write clear artist statements.

Identify the artistic intentions of the work of other students. Engage in critiques to critically assess their own work as well as the work of their peers. Speak on historical and contemporary art practices that relate to their own research interests. Document their artwork or design projects.

Understand the conceptual basis of a broad range of contemporary work within the discipline. Demonstrate an awareness of contemporary art issues related to uniqueness, authorship and originality.

Create and present a coherent body of work that could be exhibited, presented publicly or published. Successful students will demonstrate: Evidence of advanced facility with tools and techniques. Evidence of creativity, judgement and originality in order to achieve technical and conceptual resolution of self-directed and project-based work.

Fall entry yes. Winter entry yes. Plenty of studio time will be integrated into these programs, during which students will apply their theory and design knowledge into creating their own pieces.

At the end of the program, students will have a strong portfolio to help them find jobs or further their education in the field. Visual and fine arts courses are often recommended to prepare students for the program. Graduates of visual arts programs have a wide range of career opportunities to choose from, including but not limited to :. Artists in this field may make as much as their pieces sell for, which may be a lot or very little until they establish themselves.

Outstanding applicants with other backgrounds may be considered. Students must successfully complete a total of 3. Coursework must be chosen from at least three of four fields: 1 Ancient, 2 Medieval, 3 Early Modern, 4 Modern and Contemporary. No more than 2. Courses without a specific regional focus may count toward the geographical distribution requirement if the student's final paper is on an appropriate topic. The equivalent of 1.

The PhD program is designed to prepare art history students for college and university teaching, museum curatorships, and other research positions. Applicants may enter the PhD program via one of two routes: 1 following completion of an appropriate master's degree or 2 direct entry after completing a bachelor's degree.

Students unable to meet language requirements for particular courses may be refused admission to courses; enrolment in Fall courses is limited and subject to instructor's approval.

With departmental approval, credit may be given for a research methodology course taken previously. Students are encouraged to take courses reflecting a variety of time periods and geographic zones.

Orientation to Art Historical Research Methods , a workshop for new students, is recommended.
